Gold COT — October 2, 2026

Gold (GC) COT Analysis: Week Ended October 2, 2026

Executive summary

  • Managed Money de-risking continues: Managed Money trimmed gross longs by 3,988 contracts and added 3,083 gross shorts, lowering net long exposure by 7,071 contracts to +120,318 contracts. This marks the fifth consecutive week of speculative net long reduction from the late-August high (+144,747 contracts).
  • Commercial short covering: Swap dealers and commercial producers covered short positions aggressively, reducing aggregate commercial net short exposure by 11,936 contracts to -250,967 contracts (swap dealers net short: -229,704; producer/merchants net short: -21,263).
  • Open interest contraction: Total market open interest fell by 6,344 contracts (-1.54%) to 406,456 contracts, reflecting net liquidation as gold prices declined toward the lower end of their multi-month trading range.
  • Price action alignment: Front-month GC futures dropped from $4,287.2/oz on September 25 to close at $4,130.5/oz on October 2, 2026, confirming that the price pullback has been driven by long liquidation and fresh speculative shorting rather than broad commercial selling.

Historical extremes context

  • Managed Money: Speculative net length (+120,318 contracts) has moderated toward the lower half of its 2026 dynamic range. Over the observed history, net positioning peaked at +144,747 contracts on August 28, 2026, and bottomed at +90,032 contracts on April 10, 2026. Speculators are no longer stretched long, but positioning remains well above year-to-date troughs.
  • Swap Dealers: Net short exposure (-229,704 contracts) is the lightest since July 2026, having retracted from peak net shorts of -246,819 contracts on August 28, 2026.
  • Producer/Merchants: The net short position of -21,263 contracts is near multi-month lows (lightest producer short hedging since April 2026), reflecting diminished miner forward-selling at lower price levels.

Flows and week-over-week changes

  • Managed Money:
    • Gross Longs: 131,711 ($-3,988$ or $-2.94\%$)
    • Gross Shorts: 11,393 ($+3,083$ or $+37.10\%$)
    • Spreading: 36,294 ($+3,418$ or $+10.40\%$)
    • Speculative participation shifted decisively: 12 long traders exited the category (active long traders fell from 92 to 80), while 3 new short accounts entered (up to 17 traders from 14).
  • Commercials (P/M & Swap Dealers):
    • Producer/Merchants bought back 5,033 gross short contracts while adding 481 longs.
    • Swap dealers reduced 6,213 gross shorts while adding 209 longs.
  • Nonreportable (Small Traders):
    • Net length fell by 4,715 contracts to +32,335 as retail longs liquidated 3,653 contracts and added 1,062 shorts.

Commercials vs speculators

Managed Money Net: [======> +120,318 ] (Bullish, Trimming)
Other Reportables Net: [=====> +98,314 ] (Structural Long)
Nonreportable Net:      [==>     +32,335  ] (Retail Long)
Producer/Merchant Net:  [<==     -21,263  ] (Mild Hedge Short)
Swap Dealers Net: [<====== -229,704 ] (Major Counterparty Short)

The standard structural dichotomy remains intact: 1. Speculative side: Managed Money and Other Reportables hold a combined +218,632 contracts in net long exposure. However, Managed Money is systematically paring back risk, bringing gross long exposure down from 159,819 contracts in late August to 131,711 contracts. 2. Commercial side: Commercial entities hold -250,967 contracts of net short exposure. As spot and futures prices dropped into the $4,100s, commercial entities absorbed speculative selling by taking profits on short hedges and scaling back swap hedges.

Open interest and participation

  • Total Open Interest: 406,456 contracts, down 6,344 contracts from 412,800 the prior week. This is moderately below the late-August peak of 427,957 contracts, but substantially higher than the mid-year trough of 326,052 contracts on June 5, 2026.
  • Trader Breadth: Total reporting traders dropped by 7 to 286 traders (vs. 293 the prior week).
  • Concentration:
    • Top 4 Traders: Hold 21.2% of gross longs and 39.4% of gross shorts (net: 20.6% long / 37.6% short).
    • Top 8 Traders: Hold 30.6% of gross longs and 58.3% of gross shorts (net: 28.1% long / 54.9% short).
    • Concentration on the short side remains heavily institutionalized within the largest 8 swap dealers and producers.

Price context

Price (Close) vs Key COT Dates:
2026-01-29: $5,689.8 | Peak price of the annual cycle
2026-04-10: $4,849.4 | Managed Money positioning trough (+90k net)
2026-07-16: $4,004.8 | Price low of 2026 series
2026-08-25: $4,679.5 | Late-summer price rebound high
2026-09-25: $4,287.2 | Prior COT report date
2026-10-02: $4,130.5 | Current COT report date (-$156.7/oz WoW)

Front contract Gold futures declined -$156.7/oz (-3.66%) during the week ended October 2, 2026, falling from $4,287.2 to $4,130.5 after touching a low close of $4,113.5 on September 28. The simultaneous drop in price, open interest (-6,344 contracts), and Managed Money net positioning (-7,071 contracts) confirms a classic long-liquidation cycle.

Risks and watchpoints

  • Support testing: Futures are hovering just above the July lows ($4,004.8 on July 16, 2026). If prices breach $4,000, Managed Money still has 131,711 gross longs that could be subject to accelerated stop-out selling.
  • Speculative short accumulation: Managed Money gross shorts expanded +37.1% in a single week (from 8,310 to 11,393 contracts). Continued build-up in gross shorts from historically low levels would indicate growing momentum-based downside pressure.
  • Commercial support floor: Producer/merchant gross short positions have contracted to 39,463 contracts. If commercial short-covering continues to accelerate below $4,100, it would signal that physical suppliers and refiners see limited value in locking in hedge sales at current price levels.
