It highlights a global trend of central banks, including China, Singapore, Czech Republic, Kazakhstan, and Poland, increasing their gold reserves to diversify away from the dollar. The video also notes Japan's booming luxury jewelry market, with consumers buying gold as a hedge against the weakening yen and inflation.",

"transcript": "So what are you seeing behind the moves we've got in gold recently? Yeah, I would say gold's probably been the biggest topic of debate in my team the last 24 hours. We had this sudden 4% surge yesterday, which just seemed completely out of line with almost everything else that was kind of happening on the day and with recent price action where it's kind of not really moved in weeks despite the volatility elsewhere. Now, I'm there must have been some flow behind that, but I think it's extraordinarily interesting. With the disclaimer that the short-term volatility the last five weeks has made all short-term trading a bit erratic and hard. And as we've mentioned, there's the US-Iran risk. I think that this move fundamentally makes sense. I was someone who turned bearish gold at the start of the war. I have been bearish now until this flow. I now see this as a valid move higher and maybe the start of the bull trend reasserting. That's because the Fed last week undermined the Fed's credibility at the margin, which means uh lower real yields expected in the future, but also that was a blow to the dollar. And ultimately, longer-term, gold has just traded off dollar and real yields. If both of them are going to be lower, gold will be higher. Coming off last week's historic US Treasury intervention in the Fiat Japanese Yen currency market. And a weak US jobs report earlier this morning, both gold and silver broke higher in their respective spot prices through the week's trading. This stanza from a Financial Times opinion piece made the rounds this week, suggesting the US Treasury's reluctance to let foreign central banks such as Japan use their US dollar reserves, will redouble other countries' search for more attractive reserve diversification alternatives. Central bank gold buying being an unmentioned increased target worldwide. For instance, China's PBOC bought nearly 20 metric tons of gold bullion reserves last month, July 2026, increasingly buying the gold price dip since last March, month after month. Other central banks who recently also reported adding to their gold bullion reserves included Singapore, the Czech Republic, and the National Bank of Kazakhstan. Here's a running estimate of the largest 12 central bank net gold purchases over the past four months. Tens of millions of ounces of gold reserve buying diversification since only April 2026. You may be surprised to see how much Europe, mainly Poland, has been buying of late. Also making the rounds this week was an FT article citing a source from EU policymakers citing their disappointment in seeing the US sell Fiat Euros in order to make its recent dramatic market intervention in the Fiat Japanese Yen. In other words, no Fiat currency promise bile is safe from unilateral US market intervention. So go get more gold reserves instead. Speaking of getting more gold, for the first time in over 13 years, South Korea made news this week, announcing it too is beginning to buy gold reserves, focusing on internal mined and refined gold production within South Korea to start. Better get a move on South Korea. According to their latest data, the country only has a tiny 1.1% allocation to fiscal gold in its foreign exchange reserves as the end of June 2026 data. Unsecured gold ETF demand has finally reversed from the past few months of sell-offs, and even European investors were net buyers of paper gold allocations last month, July 2026. Asian paper gold ETF demand has remained the most sticky and climbing throughout this 2026 gold price pullback. Continue reports this week that China has designs on Hong Kong becoming a major hub for the world gold trade to come. China wants more than a Fort Knox from Hong Kong. The global gold rush is tilting east, and Beijing wants Hong Kong to play the fulcrum. China has launched a physical-delivery conduit with the offshore hub, in a move that could help shift price discovery towards a Yuan-settled system. And on Friday, Bloomberg reported China's central bank has been shifting more of its reserves of the precious metal to Hong Kong. But London and New York still handle five times more trading. Forging a new balance in global markets will be harder than moving gold bars. The People's Bank of China has built up more gold inventories in Hong Kong over the past few months. Bloomberg reported on August 7th, citing unnamed sources who described the move as the acceleration of a trend in which Chinese central bank has been moving gold reserves from London to the Asian financial hub, Hong Kong, and Shanghai launched a new delivery service for gold in July, known as Delivery Connect. Market participants can choose to deposit their physical gold holdings into the designated vault of the Shanghai Gold Exchange International Board in Hong Kong through accounts with the Connect program. After this short break, we'll take a closer look at how the Japanese are reacting to all this Fiat Yen market intervention, as conditions for a worldwide gold silver bull market mania phase continue building. The spot silver price closed the week at $63.30 an ounce bid. The spot gold price finished the week at $4,341 an ounce bid. The spot gold-silver ratio ended the week lower at 68 ounces of spot silver to afford 1 ounce of spot gold. The US labor market reported net job losses for July 2026, which caused a price pop this morning for precious metals, as well as cuts in the market's belief in a coming rate hike. After recent revisions of over-reported job gains this summer, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics is back to admitting that we had net job losses this past month. This caused the majority of markets now to believe in no movement in rates for the coming meeting in September. Onwards to Japan, a nation where the spot gold price is currently over three times its old 1980 nominal price high, yet its current silver price is lower than its old nominal 1980 price high still. Check out this growing trend from some of the world's largest net savers in Japan. Japan's luxury jewelry market is booming. And it's not just because people want to look good. Department store sales of gems, precious metals and artwork reached a record of around $2 billion in the first half of this year. That's up 19% from a year ago and the highest since records began in 2008. So why are people in Japan splurging? Simply put, to shield themselves from the weaker yen. Japan's yen in dollar terms has fallen to its lowest level in more than 30 years, while inflation continues to chip away at consumers' purchasing power. The US and Japan have even worked together in a historic market intervention to try to support the yen's value. So instead of holding cash, some shoppers are putting money into gold and branded jewelry that they believe will retain value. Some say customers are increasingly treating gold as part of their investment strategy. The trend is also changing luxury spending. Analysts say consumers are becoming more selective, buying fewer things overall, but spending more on products they expect to last. That's helping jewelry outperform other luxury goods like designer handbags. Global brands are benefiting too. Cartier owner Richemont recently reported Japan as its fastest growing market, driven by jewelry. So for many Japanese consumers, luxury isn't just about indulgence anymore. It's becoming a hedge against a weaker currency. Metals Focus reported this week a projected forecast for India to somehow still import nearly 6,000 metric tons of silver, with their festival season set to kick off in a few months. In other words, they have to go out and import some 135 million ounces of silver from now until the end of the year for that forecast to prove accurate. If you combine that with increasing silver investment demand in the second half of this year worldwide, we are likely in for a nice rally in silver prices to come. Both gold and silver have work to do. The 200-day moving average for gold is still hovering near $4,500 an ounce, and silver's 200-day moving average is just over $70 an ounce. In a bullion bull market, buying bullion below the 200-day moving average ends up proving to be a smart move over the coming long haul.",
