"summary": "The US technology sector, particularly the Nasdaq 100, is facing significant pressure, exacerbated by persistent inflation and renewed hawkishness from the Federal Reserve. Despite a pullback in bond yields, tech stocks are not recovering, as investors question the valuations and profitability of the AI boom. Technically, the Nasdaq 100 has broken a key bullish trend line, suggesting potential for further downside towards the 29,000-29,240 support area, with risks of a full-on correction.",

"transcript": "The US technology sector has been coming under a lot of pressure in recent days with the Nasdaq 100 falling further today after a weaker handover from Asian and European markets. So, what's causing this weakness and where do we go from here? Hello traders, Fawad Razaqzada here, StoneX Market Analyst. The latest move follows yesterday's hotter than expected US inflation report which revived expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes and initially sent yields and the dollar sharply higher. Interestingly though, both have since given back most, if not all, of those initial CPI reactions. Yields have fallen particularly sharply with bond prices benefiting from bargain hunting amid the broader haven trade and signs investors are rotating from equities to bonds. Interestingly, we've seen more forecast beating inflation data today, namely Producer Price Index, which came in stronger than expected, but this too failed to lift bond yields. And again, the Nasdaq hasn't responded to lower yields, remaining heavy at the time of this recording. So, with lower yields unable to benefit the Nasdaq, this suggests that the weakness in technology stocks is no longer simply about high interest rates. Increasingly, investors are questioning the valuations and economics behind the AI boom. The latest warning came from Asia where technology stocks suffered heavy losses overnight. South Korea's benchmark stock index fell about 8% and triggered circuit breakers, while European technology stocks have also come under pressure today. What's particularly telling is that TSMC or Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company delivered a rather strong revenue outlook. Yet, that failed to lift the broader technology sector. Normally, strong AI related demand from one of the world's most important chipmakers would reinforce the bullish narrative. This time, however, investors have largely looked through it. That suggests that the debate is shifting from how big AI can become to how profitable the enormous investment cycle will ultimately be. Data centers, chipmakers, and infrastructure require huge amounts of capital and higher for longer interest rates increase the cost of financing while also reducing the present value of future cash flows. There are signs that concern is spreading into credit markets too, with the cost of insuring against default among US technology companies reaching alarming levels. Markets are meanwhile also becoming more hawkish on the Fed following the CPI surprise yesterday. The October rate hike expectations have risen sharply, while a December rate hike is now heavily priced in. With oil prices remaining elevated, the inflation story remains very much alive. If you get another rally in oil prices, this could reinforce expectations for a more aggressive Fed and put further pressure on technology valuations. So, even with bond yields falling back, investors remain reluctant to buy the latest dip, and this is deteriorating the technical picture with the Nasdaq 100 having now broken below a bullish trend line that had been in place since March. The index had already been showing bearish price action recently after failing to hold above the record high hit in June, and now we are seeing some further follow-up technical selling. However, we need a daily close below the trend line to confirm the bearish reversal. If that happens, the next important support area to watch next comes in around 29,000 to 29,240 area. This zone marks the base of the previous breakout, so effectively, it is a demand area. Now, if that area breaks, then this could give rise to further follow-up technical selling in the days ahead, potentially leading to a full-on correction. On the upside, meanwhile, the first and most important resistance area now is around 30,000 to 30,370. Above there, the June high around 30,755 will come back into focus. For now though, the risks remain tilted to the downside. The combination of stretched valuation, growing doubts over the AI investment cycle, renewed Fed hawkishness, and increasingly bearish technical signals all suggest there could be more downside ahead.
