"summary": "The speaker highlights three key factors ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting on October 28th: persistent inflation, fluctuating rate hike probabilities, and a relief rally in bond markets. September CPI came in hot, indicating inflation is a sticky problem, particularly due to gasoline and airline fuel costs. Market odds for a rate hike have been uncertain, moving from 22% to 45% and back to 30%. Despite a hotter PPI, a safe haven bid in US Treasuries, UK Gilts, and German Bunds has led to lower yields, but this rally may fade given unchanged fundamental risks.",

"transcript": "Here are three things to watch ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting on October 28th. First, inflation prints. September CPI came in very hot. 3.7% headline, 2.6% core. That's concerning because digging into those figures, clearly inflation is a sticky problem, especially gasoline leading a lot of that basket increasing month-on-month. Interestingly enough, even core, which usually strips out food and energy, is showing an energy problem because energy is still considered an input into airline fares for fuel, which have risen month-on-month as well. Inflation's here to stay, now is the Fed going to react? The second thing to watch is going to be if we're going into that Fed meeting on a coin toss outcome. We did that last time up until a few days before the September meeting, where a rate hike was solidified in the OIS markets, which price in the likelihood of a rate decision in one way or the other. This time, we're getting a bit of uncertainty once again. We started off this week with about 22% chance of a rate hike going up to about 45 after that hot CPI print, coming back down to around 30. So as we approach the 28th, we may see a repeat of what we saw last time or we may be going in with coin toss uncertainty. The third thing to watch is this current relief rally that's going on in the bond markets today. Now, equity started off on the back foot off of earnings season, little bit of AI jitters, and a lot of low interest in Korean equity markets overnight. That's led to a safe haven bid in US Treasuries, followed by UK Gilts and German Bunds. All of that is well and good, but it's led to quite a big shift after that CPI print, where the two-year yield was about 4.95 immediately after the print. It's now fallen about 10 basis points. So we're seeing lower yields again even though we had a hotter PPI today. That relief rally may fade if fundamentals are really thought about because we haven't really changed the inflation picture, fiscal concerns, growth risks that plague the global economy. So going into the FOMC decision, there's a lot of moving parts here and it's certainly going to be an interesting one.",
"description": "Fed rate hike odds jumped from about 22% to 45% after a hot September CPI print, then eased to near 30% ahead of the October 28 meeting.\n\nShriya Samarth, StoneX Head of Rates, EMEA, walks through three things to watch ahead of the Federal Reserve's October decision.\n\nSeptember's Consumer Price Index came in hot, with gasoline leading the headline basket and jet fuel costs lifting airline fares inside core inflation.
