However, comments from Fed officials pushing back against an immediate hike, coupled with a pullback in Treasury yields, led to a retracement in the dollar's strength. Technical analysis suggests the DXY is testing key support levels, and a break below these could lead to a larger pullback, while a breach of resistance at 103 could signal further advance.",

"transcript": "Hey traders, today is Thursday, October 15th, and I'm Michael Boutros, Senior Market Analyst with StoneX, here for a quick multi-timeframe look at the US dollar. It's been a volatile 24 hours on the back of that CPI release that came in hotter than expected. Before we jump into the charts, here's a quick look at what that looked like. Headline CPI rose from 3.4% to 3.7%, topping expectations for a print of just 3.6% in September. Core inflation also rising from 2.4 to 2.6% and really driving home that expectation for a Fed rate hike this month. Now, overnight, the entire trade was retraced after we got comments from Fed officials essentially pushing back against those expectations. Notably, San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly acknowledged that additional tightening would likely be necessary but emphasized that there was no urgency to act in October. This was echoed by recent comments from Michelle Bowman and New York's Fed New York John Williams. And so we've seen the market sort of pair back those expectations. Fed fund futures had risen to an expectations of potentially 50/50 for a rate hike this month. We've now dropped with again now the markets almost back to where we were before. We were at 80% chance of a hold, we're back at 70% here. Now, this has been largely driven by a move also in Treasuries with the 10-year and the 30-year both responding to key technical resistance. They both been on a pre-serious upstretch and we're pretty stretched into the release. Here's the 10-year now poised to mark the largest single-week decline since back here in February. Similar scenario on the 30-year, uh, one-week rate of change now also poised to mark the largest single-week decline from February off of technical resistance. And so the US dollar has been following suit. Now, what does this mean for the DXY? Well, here's the weekly chart. The major level of resistance that we were focused on into this release was 103. 102.99 specifically is the 2016 high close and the 2020 objective swing high. We registered a high yesterday at 102.95 before exhausting. Now, that pullback is approaching and testing a major key level that we were watching on the way up. That's the 2024 high and the May 2025 high, a nice pivot zone. Both of those levels converge on the 75% parallel of the yearly uptrend. That's the level if broken would suggest more significant highs in place and the potential for a larger kickback here in the US dollar. Here's what it looks like on the daily chart. Uh, there was yesterday's rally. We noted 102.95 was the 2016 high close on the daily chart and the 2020 high. Again, we rallied right into that zone, turned right around, and we're right back at that key pivot. Stretches from 101.77 into 101.92. We tested that as support, and that's the focus on trade as we head into the close of the week. Note that this is going to be snapping a potential four-week rally. This would be the first week down, and we're looking for a reaction at that level. Drill down even deeper. Here's what it looks like on the four-hour chart. Um, that reversal takes us back below the objective weekly opening range low. There's that key support. If the DXY is indeed topping out here for a near-term pullback, rallies would need to be limited to the objective 61.8 of this drop. That gives you 102.53. You would need a confirmed daily close, ideally a weekly close below 101.77 to open up that potential for a little bit of a back and fill here from that radical advance that we saw from September. Initial downside objectives would be at a basic 38.2 retracement of the advance off the August low. That gives you 101.27. Below that, you're talking about the 50% retracement near 100.75. Note that that 50% retracement would take you back into the median line of the yearly pitchfork, and that converges basically over the next couple of days into next week right there at 101, uh, 100.75. Now, key resistance remains unchanged right at that 103 barrier. 102.95, 102.99. A topside breach above that would be needed to fuel the next major leg of the advance. You'd be looking for the 2023 objective yearly open comes in near 103.50, backed by the 2017 high at 103.82. So certainly, the remarks from the Fed members and consequently that major pullback that we saw in yields has been driving this US dollar back. It's been a pretty strong rally, you know, on the daily chart we remained in overbought territory for over two weeks with daily RSI now just breaking back below 80, and certainly, uh, 70 rather, giving us the potential for a larger washout here in the US dollar. Stay nimble into the close of the week. We still have PPI figures which are on tap, uh, roughly within the hour here, it'll probably be out by the time this video is posted. So we'll cover that, we'll give you the update on MB Forex throughout the course of the day. Till then, best of luck trading. We'll see you next week. Cheers.",
