Pumpkin farming is a labor-intensive process, requiring consistent spraying for disease and the rental of honeybees for effective pollination. They maintain a partnership with Frey Produce, which manages the marketing and distribution of their pumpkins to retailers such as Walmart.",

"transcript": "Pumpkins. More the merrier. The Rommelman brothers farm in Hoyleton. And they have traditional row crops too. They have corn, soybeans, and winter wheat. So when that winter wheat is harvested, it's time to plant the pumpkins. This has been a tremendous growing year for pumpkins. Their brothers grow about 500 acres every year. And it's a labor-intensive process. Disease pressure is way more in a pumpkin. Once they start blooming, we spray them every seven days. And one, they can't do it alone. They they tell me that it takes the honeybee about 12 trips from the male blossom to the female blossom to get enough pollen in there to make the perfect pumpkin. So, there's no way you're going to find enough honeybees naturally. Every year, they rent the honeybees to get the job done. Steve says that it's enough bees to fill a semi. And we put them various places around the pumpkin field so they can pollinate. Brad tells us it starts soon after planting. As soon as the plant starts to bloom, which is usually June. So this is a female blossom. See how it's closer to the main stem and it has this little peanut deal on the end. So that becomes your pumpkin. But your male plants are these with nothing in the stem. The pollination between the male and the female plants gets pumpkins that nice round shape. And once that's achieved, it's time to pack them up and ship them off to the store. We partner with Frey Produce. Frey does the marketing, we provide the product, and they pay for the transportation and harvest. So Frey sells these crates of pumpkins at Walmart. Giving the brothers enough time to deal with the other crops. And each other. We've always had a relationship where if we get aggravated with each other, we let them know it right then and there. And once it's over, that discussion is over, it's over. It works well, like cogs in a wheel. You know, everybody's kind of got their job and knows what they need to do and and yeah, once in a while the wheel might need a little extra grease to kind of make things mesh a little better that day.",
"description": "As you get ready to carve that seasonal pumpkin, you may not know that honeybees could have sweetened the growth of that gourd. Illinois farmers describe their special helpers.",
