"summary": "Brazil's cattle market is entering Q4 2026 with tightening supplies and resilient global demand, driven by declining female slaughter volumes indicating herd rebuilding. China's import quotas have fundamentally shifted Brazilian export timing, leading to earlier cattle procurement by slaughterhouses and feedlots. Despite these changes, international demand for Brazilian beef remains strong and diversified beyond China, with robust domestic consumption providing stability. The outlook for Q4 2026 and into 2027 remains constructive, though weather conditions and traceability requirements pose long-term challenges.",

"transcript": "Brazil's cattle market is entering Q4 2026 with tightening supplies, resilient global demand, and major changes in export patterns. To discuss the outlook, we're joined by Larissa Alvarez, Senior Market Intelligence Analyst at StoneX Brazil. Welcome Larissa, nice to see you again. It's been a long time. Good to see you too, Johanna. It's great to be back. So, Larissa, in your previous report three months ago, you were already saying that there were signs that the cattle cycle may be reversing. Are those signs clearer now? And are we starting to see fewer cattle coming to market? Yes, I will say the signs are definitely a lot clearer today than they were three months ago. Back then, we were already seeing indications that the liquidation phase of the cycle was beginning to lose momentum. But today, we have much stronger evidence that the market is moving toward tighter supplies. And one of the clearest indicators is female slaughter, because volumes have now declined for five consecutive months, and in August, we saw the lowest level since late 2024. And of course, that's important because female retention is usually one of the first signs that producers are starting to rebuild the herd. And with the breeding season now underway, we expect that trend to continue. So, while total slaughter volume remains historically high, the composition of those slaughter numbers is changing. So, looking ahead, that points to lower availability of finished cattle and a tighter supply environment over the coming quarters. Okay, understood. Something else that we discussed a while ago was um China's import quotas and how purchases increased in the first few months of the year. Is it I guess clearer now again how those quotas are changing where Brazil sells its beef? Yes, absolutely. And I think that's one of the biggest stories of 2026. Because initially, many people saw the quotas simply as a restriction on the volume China could import. But what we've learned throughout the year is that the real impact goes much further than that. Because the quotas have fundamentally changed the timing of Brazilian exports. Right. Historically, export activity was much more concentrated toward the end of the year. But now, we saw the opposite. Based on our estimates, the volume equivalent to China quota had already been filled by early the second semester compared with September of the previous year. Right. And that has implications throughout the supply chain. Why? If export needs to happen earlier, slaughterhouses need to secure cattle earlier, and feedlots need to plan placement earlier too. So, producers may also bring forward replacement cattle purchases. And because feedlots are major consumers of commodities such as corn, sorghum, and DDGs, these changes could gradually influence demand patterns across other agricultural markets as well. So, in my view, the quotas are not just a volume restriction, they represent a structural change in how the Brazilian beef supply chain operates. So, with these restrictions from China, how important then are other markets? And how is the domestic market supporting Brazil's sector? That's a great question because I think one of the biggest lessons from this year is that international demand for Brazilian beef goes far beyond China. China remains, of course, extremely important, and together with the United States, it continues to be one of Brazil's key trading partners for beef. But at the same time, we've seen growing participation from other markets across Latin America, the Middle East, Asia, and Eurasia. So, the fact that a significant share of the volumes no longer destined for China found place in alternative markets highlights how diversified demand has become. Yeah. And we should not overlook the domestic market because roughly two-thirds of Brazilian beef production remains within Brazil, which provides an important source of stability that many other exporting countries simply don't have. So, while export remains essential, the combination of resilient international demand and strong domestic consumption continues to support the sector. Okay, so then what are the main supply side risks to watch during Q4? Like how much of a concern are the weather and the rules on tracking where cattle come from? Perfect. I would highlight two main areas. The first one is weather, because most Brazilian cattle are still raised on pasture. So, weather conditions remain extremely important for availability. And under the current El Niño pattern, some regions are expected to benefit from from favorable rainfall, while others may face more challenging conditions. And one area that deserves particular attention is Northern Brazil, which has been responsible for a significant share of recent herd expansion. So, any impact on pasture availability could influence regional cattle supplies. And the second area is traceability and market access, because this year, the European Union actions related to traceability requirements highlighted how important these issues are becoming. So, I see these less as a short-term disruption and more as a long-term challenge, because exporters will increasingly need stronger traceability monitoring and compliance systems to maintain access to higher-value markets. Okay. And Larissa, correct me if I'm wrong, but um I was talking to a colleague earlier today and Northern Brazil seems to be quite dry because of El Niño. Um so that's definitely something to keep an eye on. Um if you had to sum up your outlook for Brazil's cattle market in the final quarter of 2026, what would you say? Well, overall, I remain constructive on the market, because I believe the fourth quarter will further confirm that cattle supplies are becoming tighter as female retention continues and the cattle cycle moves into a new phase. But at the same time, demand remains remarkably resilient. Despite changes in China's import policies and other trade restrictions, global markets continue to absorb significant volumes of Brazilian beef. And domestically, consumption remains an important pillar of support. And another trend worth watching is a growing consumer interest in higher protein diets. As dietary habits continue to evolve, protein-rich foods, including meat and dairy products, remain well-positioned. So, when I put all of these factors together, that are tighter supplies, resilient demand, export diversification, and supportive consumption trends, I continue to see supportive fundamentals for the Brazilian cattle sector, and as we move through Q4 and into 2027, the overall outlook remains constructive. Okay. Larissa, thank you again for all that wonderful insight and for taking the time to join us. And thank you to our viewers for watching.
