"transcript": "US banks have kicked off Q3 earning season and the message to investors is a little bit more complicated than the headline numbers suggest. So whilst trading desks are benefiting from market volatility, rising bond yields could signal a more challenging outlook ahead. So what are bank earnings telling us about the US economy and which markets could benefit? So the latest results from JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Citi Group offer a mixed picture for the US banking sector with investors looking beyond profits to assess the sort of the health of consumers, credit conditions and of course the wider economy. So let's start with JP Morgan where third quarter earnings and revenue came in below expectations, which is quite unusual for JP Morgan. Yet despite this headline miss, there were some positives to be found. So like net interest income forecast for 2026 were raised to 106.2 billion US dollars, whilst equity trading revenue jumped 49% year on year to a record 4.95 billion dollars for the quarter. However, we did see a weaker than expected fixed income trading revenue and also a slowdown in investment banking fees towards the end of September, which has weighed on sentiment. So the share price has sort of been fluctuating um below sort of 1% minus 1% to plus 1%. Goldman Sachs on the other hand is actually benefiting from stronger trading activity with equities revenue really helping to drive the share price higher. Citi Group also reported a strong quarter for fixed income trading, recording its best third quarter performance for more than a decade. So whilst the results differ from one bank to the other, I think there is a bit of a clear theme and that is that market volatility, particularly in the equities, is creating opportunities for the trading desks. Um, and I think looking a little bit deeper into this, the big question now is what really these results tell us about the US economy. I think for now there are few signs of significant stress among consumers. Um, for example, JP Morgan's provision for credit loss is actually fell 19% year on year to 2.74 billion dollars, whilst net charge offs also declined. So that's encouraging, it suggests really that borrowers are at least for the moment managing to cope with this higher interest rate environment. However, I do think there is sort of signs of uh, or warning signs emerging. I mean, as we've seen longer dated US Treasury yields have been rising faster than short-term yields flattening the curve. And if borrowing costs remain elevated, then this could eventually put pressure on households and businesses and that increases credit risks for banks with large consumers um, and and sort of within their large consumer lending operations. So in conclusion, I'd say that today's results actually look relatively resilient, but investors perhaps could also already be thinking about what happens next. Um, and so the earnings at this stage don't signal any immediate deterioration in the US economy, but they do suggest that investors will need to be a little bit selective. Um, how this is playing out on the S&P 500, for example, we have seen that, you know, there's strong gains from um Goldman Sachs um is helping support the uh, the S&P 500, but we've actually seen some weakness in tech stocks, which is particularly the semiconductor stocks, which is putting pressure on um the Nasdaq and the S&P 500. So just as far as the technical analysis concerned, we saw the S&P 500 break out of a symmetrical triangle pattern and it rose to fresh record highs at 7840, um before easing back to around 7800 where it trades at the moment. Now so far that breakout from the symmetrical triangle pattern has really lacked momentum. Now if we do see a pickup in buying, that could see that buyers will target that 7900 level followed by the key psychological 8000 level. On the downside, support levels will be sort of, you know, important in determining whether this breakout holds. Um, a move below 7750 and back into that symmetrical triangle could weaken the bullish outlook. A break below the lower boundary at 7650 would point to a potential downside reversal.",
