Brazil has emerged as a major global cotton exporter, accounting for about 35% of global trade, driven by increased production, improved equipment, and competitive pricing. Global consumption is up 1.5% year-over-year, while global production is down 3.8%, leading to an interesting market dynamic where consumption is expected to surpass production by nearly 5%. StoneX is launching a new OTC cash-settled Brazil basis swap product in partnership with Cotlook to help traders hedge their Brazil basis risk more effectively.",

"transcript": "Cotton markets are being shaped by a changing balance between supply and demand, as well as shifting trade flows and uncertainty over what lies ahead. Brazil has strengthened its position as a major supplier, whilst weather, crop prospects, buying decisions in key importing countries remain important factors to watch. To discuss the market's current direction and what could influence prices in the coming months, I'm pleased to welcome Bailey McHenry, Senior Vice President of Consulting at StoneX. Bailey, welcome. Thank you, Fiona, it's a pleasure to be here. So, although you've been working at StoneX for a few years now, it's actually your first time with us. So, could you tell us more about yourself? Sure, thank you. Thank you for having me. Um, I've been with StoneX for uh, over nine years now. And I work on the cotton risk management desk. We are based out of Miami, Florida, in the US. Uh, and we have a very global client base. We're a small team, but we reach a lot of different clients throughout the world. Uh, we primarily focus on risk management and hedging for anyone in the uh, cotton supply chain. So that includes growers, merchants, textile mills, and anybody in between. And I would love to hear your views on the cotton market right now. What's going on? Sure, absolutely. It's been an interesting year for the cotton market. We are coming out of a season of low prices, historically low prices in the previous two years, uh, very flat, very uh, uninteresting market, let's say. Um, but now this year things have started to ramp back up a little bit. So we've seen a lot of price activity, a lot of price movement. Um, both driven by the supply and demand fundamentals within the cotton market, uh, but also based on the uh, geopolitical events that have been happening this season. So things have become much more active. Uh, we do see some interesting uh, crop developments this season, which has particularly been driving some of the price movement that we've had. And then Brazil, I mean, now the world's largest cotton exporter. What's driven its rise and how is it changing global trade? Yes, Brazil has become an extremely important component in the cotton market worldwide. Uh, as far as trade goes, they account for about 35% of the global trade of cotton, uh, global exports that is. So, there has been a huge increase in the production over the past uh, three seasons or so, especially in cotton in Brazil. Uh, it's planted as part of the second crop, and some of the area has increased that's gone towards planting cotton. Uh, this has come as a development both in uh, the uh, equipment, as well as just the knowledge and and interest in planting cotton. It's a extremely productive crop for them in Brazil, and so there's been a lot of increase in that production. Uh, we also have seen that the uh, worldwide, it's become uh, one of the preferred bales of import for cotton, given that it's a very high quality cotton and uh, it's it's very uh, widely in demand. And it's also very uh, price conscious. So they have a very uh, lower cost of production than other places, and so um, it's allowed for it to be highly competitive in the marketplace. And then looking at the demand side, I mean, what could shift the market's direction over the coming months? Yes, absolutely. We have had an increase in the global consumption this season. It's up about 1 and a half percent year over year, uh, from the previous season. So we're starting to see things pick back up. We had uh, quite a few uh, fluctuations over the past five to six years, especially following COVID. Uh, we had a huge increase and then it it fell and we had a huge decline and flat prices, low consumption, uh, relatively weak consumption for a couple of seasons. And then now it's started to pick back up again. Um, and that's a really the result of a few different things. So we have seen that uh, consumer sentiment has improved. Uh, we've seen also inflation has had an impact on that as well. On the on the price increase. Uh, but that said, global production is also down, that's the other side of the coin. So we have both a situation where we are seeing the higher consumption, uh, along with the global production being down about 3.8% uh, year over year. Um, overall, we see that some of the importing countries are expected to increase their imports for this season. And that includes Pakistan, Turkey, Vietnam, and Bangladesh are all expecting uh, larger year over year uh, imports. Uh, and that's based on that stronger consumption that we're seeing. So, um, we have an interesting development now, especially where we have the global uh, consumption is expected to surpass the global production this season. And that's by nearly 5%. Uh, so it's a quite an interesting moment in the market prices. Yeah, that's quite significant. And then Bailey, you said earlier, you're based in Miami, and well, you're here in London, but this is only a stopover on your way to Istanbul, where you'll be presenting a new StoneX product. Tell us more. Yes, yes, we are very excited. Uh, we have developed a new product which will allow the global trade to be able to hedge their Brazil basis a little bit better. So right now, market traders are limited to the ICE number two futures contract, which is our best tool that we have. It is very effective for what it is, but it's based on the US cotton bill. Uh, so it has left a portion of the risk in the market unhedged and not able to be hedged. Uh, so what we have created, we have partnered with Cotlook, uh, Cotton Outlook, which is a very widely respected uh, industry uh, organization. We are working with them and partnering with them. They produce a daily uh, price for the Brazil basis. So we are utilizing their price as the index uh, against which this Brazil basis swap will be priced. And the way that it's going to work is it's an over-the-counter OTC product. It will be a cash-settled contract, and it's going to be calculated through using Cotlook's uh, daily Brazil uh, basis price minus the price of the New York futures. So basically, it allows for us to cover that portion of the risk that has so far been unhedged. Um, it's based on uh, exporting terms, so CFR terms. Um, and as I mentioned, it is a cash-settled contract, so it will allow for traders to be able to manage their risk without having a delivery component to this product. Um, so we are very excited to be working with Cotlook and and creating this new tool for hedgers in the marketplace to be able to effectively manage their price risk. And we're headed to Istanbul to the International Cotton Association event, where we will have the opportunity to meet with our clients and colleagues and other industry participants and get to share this great tool with them. So we're very very excited about that. Excellent, well, have a great time there and all the best with the unveiling of that product. Thank you very much, I appreciate it.
