"summary": "The US dollar remained strong this past week, while US stocks like the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 hit record highs before pulling back, influenced by weaker NFP data and Fed speakers hinting at rate hikes with timing flexibility. Treasury yields, including the 10-year and 30-year, reached multi-year highs, and oil prices rose, contributing to inflationary pressures. Looking ahead, US CPI data and Q3 bank earnings are key focuses, with hotter-than-expected CPI potentially boosting the dollar and limiting stock upside, while strong bank earnings could help the Dow Jones recover.",

"transcript": "This past week, the US dollar has remained resilient around 18-month highs. We also saw US stocks, particularly here the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq 100, reach record highs earlier in the week before coming off that. And this is basically as investors were still digesting those weaker than expected NFP report from earlier in the week. We also had several Fed speakers signaling towards rate hikes but flexibility surrounding the timing of those rate hikes. As a result, we've seen the market sort of stick with this concept that the or pricing of around a 20% probability of a rate hike in October and still around an 80% probability of another rate hike before the end of the year. Now, Treasury yields remained a big story this week. We had the 10-year yield reach a 24-year high, as did the 30-year Treasury yield. Oil prices were also higher across the week, um, adding to those sort of inflationary pressures. Now, as we head into the new week, Fed expectations, yields are very much in focus as attention turns to US CPI data. Um, now, as far as expectations are concerned, the ISM services and PMI figures really do point to sort of an upside risk as far as the CPI report is concerned. Now, if we do get signs of stickier than expected inflation, that's obviously going to add to the US dollar strength story. And I think this is going to be particularly interesting when we're looking at sort of the Euro US dollar and Sterling US dollar crosses. Um, just having a look at the chart, for example, of the Sterling US dollar. Um, we can see that sort of after falling really quite sharply, um, across the month of September, it has found support around that 1.32 level. And it's just consolidating above that 1.32 level. Now, obviously, if we do get a stronger or hotter than expected CPI report, then we could see that dollar strength coming, um, seeing that pair break below the 1.32 level. And that's particularly if we do get some weaker, um, jobs data from the UK as well. Um, then as far as the Euro US dollar is concerned, that's also trading below the, um, the 1.12 level. Um, again, after falling sharply across that September and early October. Now, if we do see again that that that hotter than expected, um, US data point, that could break below that sort of 1.12 level, sorry, the 1.12 level, take it out as well as that 1.1160, which was the low that we've seen, bringing attention to towards the 1.11. Um, also, I think it's worth keeping in mind that we've got the, um, situation with the bond yields in Europe, um, particularly with the fiscal position and the political gridlock and uncertainty, um, in France. So if we see that continuing to add nerves to the market, lifting those, um, the yields on the, the out higher, then we could actually see, um, that that level taken out. Now, just as also as far as what the hotter, a hotter than expected CPI report could mean for stocks, um, that would actually limit, I think, the upside, um, that we've seen in stocks and could actually pull them lower. But stocks are also going to be paying a lot of attention to US banks earnings. So Q3 earning season officially kicks off, um, this week with October the 13th. You've got earnings coming in ahead of the open from JPMorgan, Wells Fargo Group, Goldman Sachs, um, Citi Group, and expectations are actually relatively high. Sorry, on October the 14th, we're going to have Morgan Stanley, um, as well as Bank of America. But just overall, earnings expectations are relatively high. We've got earnings growth for these big banks expected to be around 20% year on year. Um, now, if we look at how banks are actually trading heading into these reports, the actual index for banks is trading around 13% lower from recent highs. And that's basically because we can't escape from this yield story. And I think that's also going to be very much a focus when the earnings come through. Will, um, particularly surrounding the investment bank side of the earnings, there have been several IPOs canceled. Will we start to see, um, these sort of tighter financial conditions and this sort of, um, unnerving in the market due to these higher yields actually starting to, um, impact investment banking revenue. So, as far as the markets to be watching, I think I'm going to be looking there at the Dow Jones. The Dow Jones has been trading in a falling channel. Now, this is actually in quite a contrast to the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq, which as we mentioned, have been at rate trading at record highs. Um, so will we get be able to get stronger than, um, expected, um, Q3 earnings from the banks could actually help the, the Dow Jones, um, recover some of that downside that it's been experienced. And that would especially be the case if we saw inflation come in cooler than expected. But as I said, that's probably not going to be our base case. But, um, if we do see the, uh, stronger than expected Q3 banks earnings, then this is the level here, the 51,500, is the upside that we're looking to break above near term. We've found some support on the 200 EMA, or just above the 200 EMA at 50,500. That recovery has faced rejection a couple of times there at the 51,500. So, if we can get a rise above that, that exposes the, um, 50 EMA and the upper band of the falling channel at around 52,100. Only above there will we really start to see potentially, um, a more constructive outlook at least in the near time. If we don't get a breakthrough there, then we're basically the, the outlook remains quite bearish, but sellers would need to get a break below that 200 EMA at the 50,500 level in order for the, um, bears to to gain traction and head towards 50,000.
