Technical indicators for both the dollar and treasuries suggest a turn, with the dollar showing signs of weakness and treasuries showing signs of bottoming. Gold has cleared immediate resistance, and bullish momentum is building, though the sustainability of the breakout remains to be seen.",

"transcript": "Gold is breaking out after a brutal sell-off that seen the price fall more than $600 an ounce since late August. And it's coinciding with two markets that have contributed to the decline, showing signs they may also be turning. The US dollar and benchmark US Treasury note futures. The correlation matrix on your screen explains why this matters. Gold has maintained a strong inverse relationship with the US dollar. Particularly over longer timeframes, with the 120-session correlation sitting at -0.86, and the 20-session reading at -0.8. The relationship with Treasury note futures has been less consistent. But over the past month, it's strengthened dramatically to +0.89. And after such a strong rally in the dollar, there are now signs it may be starting to turn. RSI 14 recently reached 76.8, ranking it in the highest 1.5% of observations since 2013. While the ATR stretch indicator was among the highest 5%. But RSI has since rolled over, and the price has broken the uptrend running from the early September lows. It doesn't guarantee a reversal, but if the break sticks, it could provide some relief for gold. It's a similar story in Treasury futures, although this time we're looking for a potential bottom. The price recently fell below its 2023 lows, leaving RSI 14 among the most oversold 0.5% of observations since 2016. And the ATR stretch indicator among the most extreme 2%. Trading volumes have since surged, with noticeable downside wicks suggesting buyers have been stepping in at lower levels. Again, it's too early to call a bottom, but the signs are definitely there. And with both markets showing signs of turning, Gold has now broken out of the downtrend that's been in place since late August. After rebounding from support around $4,070 earlier this week, the price has since cleared resistance at $4,184. That's the immediate level to watch on the downside. A pullback and bounce could provide an opportunity to initiate longs with a tight stop beneath, initially targeting a former support zone running between $4,225 to $4,235 an ounce. Followed by $4,300, $4,333, and $4,400. RSI 14 has also moved above 50, while MACD has crossed high into positive territory, suggesting bullish momentum is also building. Alternatively, a move back beneath $4,184 could open the door to shorts targeting the broken downtrend, followed by $4,116.30 an ounce. So, two markets that have been putting pressure on gold are showing signs that they may be turning, just as gold breaks its own downtrend. The question now is whether that breakout can stick.",
"description": "Gold's breakout from its downtrend hinges on the U.S. dollar and Treasury note futures, the two markets behind its selloff that may now be turning.\n\nDavid Scutt, StoneX Media Senior Market Analyst, walks through the correlations, overbought and oversold signals, and momentum readings framing the move.\n\nGold holds a strong inverse correlation with the U.S. dollar over longer timeframes, and its link to Treasury note futures has tightened sharply over the past month.
