Rising Brent crude oil prices, which have broken above $100 a barrel, are fueling inflation concerns for the UK economy. This inflationary environment, combined with a weaker economic outlook, suggests that higher interest rates will not be bullish for the Pound, reinforcing the bearish outlook for GBP/USD.",

"transcript": "The pound against the US dollar was coming off as earlier lows at the time of this recording, but the downside pressure remains intact. Hello traders, Fawad Razaqzada here, StoneX Market Analyst. So, the pound has been declining in recent days against the US dollar because of a strengthening US dollar and elevated bond yields with crude oil breaking higher. Now the main driver for the cable is still the US dollar. The Federal Reserve September meeting minutes delivered a fairly hawkish message with most policymakers seeing another rate increase as appropriate by year-end. Persistent inflation remains a concern, meaning that the Fed is still quite hawkish. There's an interesting shift though in the Fed's thinking about the AI investment boom. Officials are increasingly concerned that the scale of spending could add to inflationary pressures rather than simply boosting productivity. But there is a catch for the dollar bulls. A lot of this hawkishness is already priced into the markets. Investors are expecting another 25 basis point hike in December, followed by further tightening next year. We think that the Fed looks too aggressive, but in the short term, this should allow the cable to remain under pressure given the rise in oil prices and everything else that's going on at the moment. Indeed, crude oil prices have pushed higher in recent days with Brent breaking through that $100 a barrel level as disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz shows little signs of easing. If the $100 level holds as support, now the technical picture for crude oil will remain bullish. And that will create additional problem for Sterling. Higher oil prices risk feeding into inflation and that could hurt the economy. That can push interest rate expectations higher, but higher interest rates are not necessarily bullish for the pound when they are being driven by an inflation shock and a weaker economic outlook. So, this means that the selling pressure on the cable remains intact for the time being. And looking at the chart, you can see that price has been consolidating above the 1.3140 to 1.3175 area, which has produced two previous bounces earlier this year, but the latest failure to recover convincingly from here suggests that the buyers are losing control. A clear break below this zone would strengthen the bearish case and put the psychologically important 1.30 level firmly on the radar. That doesn't mean that 1.30 is guaranteed, markets rarely move in a straight line, but the fact that price has been struggling and the dollar remaining largely supported suggests that the path of least resistance remains to the downside. Thanks for watching, don't forget to like this video and I'll see you in the next update. Take care.",
