"transcript": "Oil prices, Treasury yields, and US stocks easing back from record highs, but attention is also turning towards earnings season. To talk us through what's moving the market and what to watch, we are joined by Alex Ridgers, Global Head of Retail Dealing. Thank you for joining us, Alex. Hi, Joanna. So, as I said, oil prices, Brent around $105. We've seen Treasury yields still very elevated at multi-decade highs. Stocks pull back from record highs. What's what's your take on the market right now? Well, I think we we've, if we look back in time, we've had a significant period where we've had very sort of binary outcomes moving the markets and almost nothing else moving the markets. So, I think recently we've had Fed, Fed, Fed and nothing but. And then we go back to is it war or is it peace in Iran? Then we go back further, we've got tariffs, tariffs, tariffs. And so these events have, you know, whether they're happening or how severely, has been guiding markets one way or the other. But it really seems like we're we're getting away from those sort of binary outcomes and actually having lots of individual effects moving the markets. So it's not all about the US Treasury yield right now. No, no, I mean, no, thank thank God. It really so it really feels like a melting pot. So, obviously, AI's not going away. We don't need to dwell on that. We've we've talked enough about that. But what's coming out next week, which is going to be very interesting to start, is we have the US bank earnings. So, banks sort of become almost background background noise, but actually, when we look at, like, I think going looking at Goldman Sachs, last year, second quarter, analyst estimates for for $9.77 to be made earnings per share. Came in at at 11. This quarter in 2026, $21. So, you can see almost, you know, a more than a doubling of earnings in one year. So, all of a sudden, you know, banks are, you know, a really good bellwether of they needs to be other economic activity, companies buying other companies, et cetera, to be driving these P&Ls. Um, so from that perspective, it's great to see other, you know, other other markets, other companies, less about bond yields, less about AI, um, and the banks. And just to mention then the week after, we've got Netflix, Tesla, we've got a a wealth of other firms. So, it's going to be really interesting in the coming weeks, you know, and again, we'll be one of the big drivers of the markets. Apart from bonds and you know. Yeah, because I mean, earnings earnings expectations, I think they're we're expecting to see earnings growth around 30% this quarter. So, that's solid earnings growth, which is helping to drive that optimism and took stocks. Yes, exactly. And that's it, you know, where I think everyone's can only see growth from AI. Now they're going, right, oh, actually, wait a minute, over the last five years, most companies have been growing and growing strongly. And then what about non-farm payrolls? I mean, that was quite an interesting number that we saw last Friday. What was your take? Yes, so again, you know, and again, even over the last few years, I think with the the dominance of sort of Donald Trump and the things going on, non-farm payrolls had become less important. And we've seen we saw big moves, particularly Monday and Tuesday, once everyone digested the low figure on Friday. And my take is, I think it's, you know, low low jobs growth is great. You know, people say, well, that's not good, less jobs being created. But actually, we've been too close to sort of full capacity for too long. And so what full capacity means is there's nothing spare, so inflation goes up. And so essentially, there is no one else to replace your job, so therefore, you need to hire, you need to pay more, and no one's unemployed. So, we need there needs to be a bit of slack. So, I think that's an absolute brilliant measure, and I think the US government in particular and governments around the world will will welcome that. And then sticking with the US, obviously, the midterm elections, they're less than a month away now. Yes, again, another another thing to to chuck in the melting pot. And, um, so I think with 3rd of November when that'll start. So, looking today, there is now a 62% chance, according to the markets, that the Democrats will hold both the House and the Senate, which is pretty enormous. So, there's still obviously 38% chance that doesn't, or they'll just hold on to hold one. But it's we're starting to see that sort of change of again, and again, of that sort of loosening of of Donald Trump's power, which in turn will loosen his impacts on the market. And that does bring me to that question then, do you think we're seeing the end of Trump's influence on the market? Because it has been fairly chaotic, a rollercoaster ride over the past few years. What do you think? Well, I suppose, I mean, today it's not quite a last hurrah, you know, we're we're Donald Trump, you know, is is still very much in power. But again, driving driving Brent crude, as you said, up to $105, up 5% on the day, um, through sort of more threats to Iran of of further increased force. Um, it's another sign of of the power he can hold. But I think, obviously, interestingly, in these things, I think, you know, for for taking an analogy, sort of war and peace was Tolstoy saying, Napoleon wasn't in charge. You know, he he was the man at the top. Um, you know, a king is a slave to history almost, that he is the man at the top. Everything is happening underneath. He is not creating what it's the people, it's other things happening. But as Donald Trump's case, you know, a lot of what you've seen over the last couple of years, he has directly been driving the markets through his decisions. So, it does sort of feel in that way, you know, even though he's still there's still a lot of power, you know, he will still be president for quite a while yet, which is, you know, not saying it's a bad thing, you know, that's that's not for me to say. Um, but it really feels like with the midterms coming up, it's a real sort of opportunity for the markets to take back power. And so what has the next government got to look forward to then? Well, again, this is I think what the markets will ultimately come to look at. You know, beyond current goings on, these will drive what's happening in the next few weeks, and the midterms directly will drive markets for the next few weeks. But actually, when we're looking longer term, will will is there going to be an end to a war? Um, or will the Democrats be pushing towards that? And then further to that, will they be trying to curb the US government's, you know, ridiculous deficit? You know, there has been such a drive for Donald Trump almost almost to define himself in history just by saying growth, growth, growth at any cost, spend at any cost, whatever it takes. Um, but with that curtailing, you know, that's as and even to think tariffs as well, what will Democrats do about tariffs? So, it really feels like the days of it being one sort of power dominating the markets totally, we've got so many interesting issues. You know, and I think this more more than anything, it's worth saying for traders, you know, there's got to step back and say, well, hey, I may I may be right about this thing, but actually, the market's being driven by another power of the side, you know, just to take all of that melting pot in when making a trading decision. Thank you very much for your analysis once again, Alex. For more videos like this, please do like and subscribe.",
