"summary": "The natural gas market is experiencing some profit-taking as it transitions from late summer to early fall, with the October contract now being the spot contract. Despite this, natural gas remains a dominant fuel source in Texas due to persistent heat and low wind generation. Storage levels in the US saw a +15 Bcf build, while European storage remains low, particularly in Great Britain. The forecast indicates continued extreme heat in the central and eastern US through early September, which could support demand, but a cooler trend is expected by the second week of September. Tropical Storm Dolly is being monitored, with some models suggesting a potential track into the Gulf of Mexico.",

"transcript": "Good morning, natural gas. It's Friday, August the 28th, 2026. I'm Tim Beggins, President of Elk Trading Company. And today is the first day for October to be spot contract. Currently, we're trading at 2.8880, down 2.6 cents or just below 1%. As you can see, we're above the 13-period exponential moving average, but we're below the 48-period, which comes in at 2.9120. The RSI is trying to turn sideways, possibly down, as we go into the weekend. So there's been some profit-taking. September did expire on a good note, but it came off of its highs late in the session. So, same thing for October, a little bit of pressure. Why? Because we're changing seasons here. We're moving out of late September, uh, excuse me, summer here, and into early fall for parts of the country. So, let's take a look at the hourly chart here. And as you can see, we bounced off of the second support level, which came in at 2.8340, and the RSI is trying to turn to the upside. So we're back through, uh, first support, which was now resistance, and we're heading toward the daily pivot, which came in today at 2.9320. So, looks like we're going to close it up on possibly a slight negative or possibly slight positive basis here today as we make a move toward the daily pivot. Let's take a look at what happened in storage yesterday. And, yep, it was plus 15 Bcf. Take a look, minus 20 Bcf for salt dome storage in the South Central region. And we're probably going to get a good number next week as well because it's been hot, hot, hot in Texas. Let's take a look at the grid here, and this is ERCOT. We got a little bit of rain last night, so the grid is now expected to be just under 88,000 megawatts today. Renewables are pushing around 33 and a half thousand megawatts. As a result, natural gas is picking up almost 52% of the fuel mix. That's right, because wind is so low. It still remains very, very hot here in Texas. And it's going to stay that way for at least the next few days. Solar is doing well, but natural gas is the king right now. And let's take a look at the national grid. You guessed it, there's some volatility in PJM, a little bit here in ERCOT as well, and MISO. So, SPP also spiking up this morning, not too bad about $73, but PJM has been very, very volatile today. Let's take a look at the front-to-back spreads, and this is the injection spread. This is Jan versus the October, and look what we did. We closed that downside gap at 1.0460, and we're since bounced toward it. The, uh, upside here is 1.25. My belief here is above 1.25, you're basically paying to put gas into the ground, below it, you're not. So this has been a withdrawal period right here for the last two weeks, and that's what showed up on the EIA storage report. The RSI, though, is trying to turn up from an oversold condition. So this is basically saying, hey, looks like summer is exiting, here comes the fall. Let's take a look at the weather, though. It's still going to remain very, very warm here at least through the 6th of September. And let's take a look at the extreme heat risk right now for 8.1 million people today out of the Desert Southwest. Yes, power prices were spiking, natural gas prices were spiking outside in the Western region yesterday. So, let's take a look. There is more major heat risk here as it pushes into the upper plains of the United States, pushing up into the Dakotas, Iowa. This continues to push all the way back now. This is major heat risk, some extreme heat risk into Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. And that expands as we get into Monday. As you can see, 3.4 million people under extreme heat risk, major heat risk for 69 million people. This expands to almost 100 million people on Tuesday because now we're getting into the populated centers near Dallas and Fort Worth, and St. Louis. Look at that, extreme heat risk for 24 million people on Wednesday. And this expands again into Thursday, 36.9 million people, basically 37 million people, because we've got extreme heat risk now in the Carolinas and in parts of Virginia. So, Texas all the way up toward Chicago and back toward Virginia, going to be very, very warm. And let's take a look at the models here, which pushed it out to about the 4th here, because now we're starting to see some hints of a change in the forecast. So, still some triple digits as we go through the forecast period here. There's the 4th, triple digits in Dallas, 106 there, 102 over in South Carolina, 101 up in Jacksonville, Florida. But as you can see, we get into the 5th, and then into the 6th here. There's 104 in Dallas, but that's about it. 100s in parts of Florida and Mississippi, but then in Louisiana, that's it. It suddenly turns a little bit cooler on the forecast, probably because of rain forecast to come through into the 6th of September. So, that looks to be it for the the heat forecast here. The 6th, that's the last day of triple digits in Texas. So, that's good news there. Maybe there's one brief period on the 7th there, that's up into Wichita Falls in parts of the South, but then generally speaking, that's really about it. It starts to get very, very mild here as we start pushing into the second week of September. So, as you can see, there is some lingering triple digits and 90s, but overall, the extreme heat risk has dissipated by the second week of September. Let's take a look at the 6-10 day forecast, and it's above normal temperatures are still centered from Texas all the way back up into St. Louis. And then the 8-14 day pushes it further south toward Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Let's take a look at the, uh, Japan/Korea marker here. Actually, should have pushed this a little further down the the line here, but as you can see, it is pushing out toward new highs here. The RSI is trying to turn to the upside. Why? Well, the Strait of Hormuz is still closed, folks. I don't know what they're going to do, but it looks like that is going to remain closed for the balance of the year in my opinion. Let's take a look at the European models here, and this is the weather that's coming through here. Some cooler temperatures right now into France, but then we start to see that possibility for one last kind of heatwave here coming in toward the 4th and 5th. There's the 5th right there. You can start to see very, very warm temperatures on Saturday. That's good news, it's on the weekend, but it extends from Spain all the way back over to Ukraine. And then as we push in further into the forecast map, you can see cooler temperatures are coming in off the North Sea. That's pushing that heat down into Southern Spain, parts of Italy, and parts of Greece. Let's turn to the EU on the storage. It is 63.8% full. That is 13% below last year across the EU, but we still have our problems. Look at the Netherlands right now, sitting at 45% full. Unfortunately, they've only got two months left to go. And like, take a look, the worst one probably is Great Britain at 30.8% full. All-time lows here. Injections are just not getting up to speed. I don't know what else is going on, but this is going to be trouble for the UK this winter. And here is Asia. This is the forecast temperatures here. Outright, as you can see, seasonal temperatures, warm across the Eastern provinces, still warm in India here. There are parts of Japan also and the Koreas starting to pick up some warm temperatures. We're talking about the 80s, though. We're not talking about 90s or 100s at this stage. And let's take a look at the bigger picture for the area here for Southeast Asia. As you can see, Beijing actually fairly cool. Right now, it is going to get a little warmer by Tuesday, but then, you know, it looks like summer is over. There's some cooler temperatures also in Hong Kong, and right now, New Delhi is expected to top out here around 94 degrees today. That is about it. It gets about 96 going forward. So, it is still a little bit cooler than Houston, Texas and Dallas, Texas right now. So, that's good news there. There is some moisture coming through. That's always helpful here for the growing areas of Southeast Asia with this monsoon season coming along. And let's take a look at the LNG. There is nothing loading at Ras Laffan. And this looks like Tic-Tac-Toe right here. Looks like there's a winner here across on row four, but there is no LNG tankers loading up at Ras Laffan. And of course, we still have congestion around Qatar, around Bahrain, around Abu Dhabi, and around Oman. And of course, the straight looks fairly quiet at this time. Let's turn to the US. Well, Cameron LNG, 1.51. Fantastic news. It's even stronger utilization than we saw in the last few weeks, so that's good news there. And here's even better news. Freeport LNG popping up to 2 Bcf overnight. That's good news there. That means maintenance is just about wrapped up. And here is Creole Trail, one of the pipelines that feeds Sabine Pass. There is still some open capacity there, but running steady just under 1.4 out of 1.7. Corpus Christi basically came off just a tad bit, but it is still running just under 2.7 out of 2.75. Good news there. Here's Cameron, uh, Calcasieu Pass here, and this is 543, uh, 534,000. That's a little bit wider than it was yesterday. And there's a little bit wider here at Calca, excuse me, Plaquemines here, but modest. It's still running almost at full nameplate capacity. How about Golden Pass? Well, 489,000. So, it's okay. It could be a little better, but it is, uh, doing fairly well, stable, flopping up and down, but we'll see if this starts to ramp up as cooler temperatures are forecast again toward the third week of September. And here is the tropics. There she is, Tropical Storm Dolly. Can you believe it? It's right out there in the Mid-Atlantic. That's good news. Here it is on the satellite picture. She is getting stronger as we can see on the satellite picture. We start to see the strong rotation, these waves coming out here. It is a very focused storm at this stage. So good news there. Here's the track. It is pushing into the Leeward Islands, and up into Puerto Rico, then Dominican Republic, and Cuba. We'll see most of the forecasts are fairly flat, so we possibly could get into the Gulf here. So we'll keep a careful eye on it. But there is the tracks. As you can see, some of the tracks are pulling it up out of Cuba here toward the East Coast of Florida. And where would it take it? Possibly to East Tennessee, maybe to Dollywood. It would be just ironic. Let's take a look at the Gulf, as you can see right now. Strong storms coming off the coast here off Florida right now, coming off of Houston here. We did see some of that thunderstorm activity in the area last night. And as you can see, there's a system here off of Mexico. But as you can see, the bigger picture, there she is. There's Dolly. Look at this. The bands are extending well out, and right now, they're going to be getting close to in the next two days for the Leeward and Windward Islands. So we'll keep a careful eye on that. The system that was coming off of Africa right now has dissipated, unfortunately. And as you can see, there's a strong front coming off the East Coast of the United States. So, let's take a look at the dust. Can you guess where Dolly is? Yep, there she is. She's right in the middle of this. And that means she's going to be pushing up right here and pushing this dust further out of the system right now. Nothing here in the Gulf. You can see this band of dust here off of the Yucatan Peninsula right now. And here is the forecast here for the next two weeks going out to the 15th of September. Quiet, quiet, quiet for the Atlantic. And here is the drought monitor. As you can see, it is still very, very, very dry in the Western provinces. You can see the Panhandle of Texas, Oklahoma is exceptional drought right now. Exceptional drought New Mexico, especially Colorado, now starts to be part of Nebraska here as well. Iowa, Iowa, excuse me, Idaho, excuse me, not Iowa, Idaho, and Oregon as well as some exceptional drought areas. There is still some drought, severe drought along the Eastern coast of the United States, especially from Florida all the way back to Southern New Jersey. And here is the stocks. These are stocks between two and ten billion dollars, have a high short float, over 10%, and it's kind of a mixed bag today. Mostly in the red. CNX behind me, plus 0.63%. So recapping here, October is the new spot contract, currently trading at 2.8890, down two and a half cents or 0.82%. The RSI is trying to turn lower or at least go sideways. So, we'll expect basically a sideways to slightly up by the end of the session today as we close out the week. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below.
